Gypsum’s chemical name is calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO4·2H2O). There are three main types of plaster found in the world. Naturally, gypsum is found below the earth’s surface, like other minerals, and I call this type of gypsum Natural Gypsum. Natural gypsum is mined below the earth’s surface using conventional methods.
In India, natural gypsum is largely found in Rajasthan. Gypsum is also formed as a by-product of salt production and this type of gypsum is called marine gypsum. In India, marine gypsum is found in Tuticorin and Gujarat, where there are salt mines. Third, gypsum is also a by-product of industrial production processes such as fertilizer, copper and electricity.
The gypsum thus formed is called synthetic gypsum and is also known as phosphorus & DSG gypsum depending on the type of manufacturing process.
Plaster is an environmentally friendly alternative to using traditional sand and cement for interior plaster surfaces.
Plaster is also a faster application method for interior surfaces because it does not require a time-consuming water treatment process. Water curing is required for 20-21 days after sand-cement application to reduce heat-of-hydration shrinkage cracks. Plaster is mixed with clean water in the recommended proportions on site to obtain a homogeneous mixture. The plaster mortar will then be applied to the desired thickness on the walls and ceiling by qualified applicators. This process is called plastering. This is used for centuries in the construction space
